I just dig it when an aspiring director or producer decides to bring to live legendary comic books or manga (Japanese inspired comic books). I mean, for me, I have lived with X-Men (Archangel and Jean being my favs) all my life, and to see this characters come to life, humanised with their respective powers in place, I just love it!
Personally I have not read the manga, but basically it revolves around this black book, called "Death Note." Reading a summary on what this manga is all about, it actually reminds me of that movie made by Nicholas Cage, Ghost Rider. Here in Death Note, the hero, Light Yagami is a normal citizen minding his own business, but one thing he resented and really took to heart was the crime and corruption that was going on around him. Thus, one day he came upon the black book, and like the main character in Ghost Rider, Light began taking justice into his own hands. He would write the names of the criminals in the book, and apparently that person would die. This was the hidden power of the book. Not sure how the people die though, but I guess like "The Ring", once you watch that dreaded video tape, you are destined to die next.
Even though this 2 days (today and tomorrow) special screenings are only available in the US, well I sincerely hope for the sake of manga fans out there, Fathom Events will do it here as well. Or at least somewhere closer to home. I am sure that there are loads of manga fans who would want their manga heroes to come alive. It would be like a dream come true. It reminded me of the time when hubby watched Transformers when it first came out. At one point when the Autobots came crashing down from Earth and eventually took the forms of several heavy machinery, his eyes were wide open and he did not even blink. It came to the point where his eyes began tearing and it really looked like he was crying.
That was classic.
In my opinion, it is the responsibility of the director and producer to not cut short of what the comic or manga's story is all about. A chapter can be interpreted in a thousand ways, but when it is cut to 2 hours of dialogue, several action scenes and a corny story line, I tell you, I really hate those kind of interpretation.
So to Fathom Events and the people who had made this possible, kudos in bringing a manga come to life and here's to more of this type of film in the future!!
